AFL NSW-ACT Regulations and Code of Conduct

August 20, 2020

Dear Marist families

I'm writing to remind all Marist families about the AFL NSW-ACT Regulations and Code of Conduct. This season there have been multiple incidents in which Marist spectators and officials have behaved badly.

An extract of the Code of Conduct can be viewed at https://aflnswact.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/AFL-NSW-ACT-Code-of-Conduct-2017-FINAL.pdf

In particular, I draw your attention to clause 2.1 which relates to parents and supporters. Among other requirements, parents and supporters must

  • Teach that enjoyment is more important than winning

  • Lead by example and respect all players, coaches, umpires, officials and spectators.

  • Never publicly criticise umpires and instead raise any concerns with club officials in private

  • Not engage in physical and / or verbal intimidation, abuse or conduct towards any player, official, umpire or supporter

  • Not use offensive language.

The Marist Australian Football Club is responsible for the behaviour of all people involved in the club, including spectators. Sanctions and financial penalties can be applied to the club for breaches of the Code of Conduct by parents and spectators.

Parents and spectators who witness Code of Conduct breaches by other clubs supporters should not retaliate and instead report the conduct to the appointed ground manager or other relevant official. If you have concerns about an umpire or opposition player / official, you should raise your concerns in private with a Marist official. The Marist Australian Football Club treats these matters seriously and club officials are best placed to deal with any concerns or complaints.

I'm proud to be Marist and the reputation of our community is upheld when every person demonstrating Gospel values in the Marist tradition. Our values of faith, love, justice, compassion and hospitality are at the core of all we do. When people don't live by these values it reflects poorly on us all and it impacts on our Marist mission.

Pope Francis has said that sport is a place of unity. Let this be our focus and mission for the rest of the season and beyond.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
